3D Animations for Television Can Increase Your Viewer Retention

By Tim McGarvey

Special effects and 3D broadcast animation are an integral part of practically all feature films today. Film production is also an area in which 3D visual effects have an enormous impact. Whereas the camera only allows for actual footage, 3D animation gives the producer the ability to relay even more intense, dramatic, and fantastical images.

Because video programming and television outlets have increased dramatically in recent years, finding an audience has proven to be a growing challenge. Without a large enough audience, programs are not able to survive much less thrive. Initial viewer numbers as well as viewer retention has been proven to increase with the use of 3D animation for broadcast. Modern audiences are also more used to the navigation of 3D images due to increased 3D gaming and films.

Because of the time and money that is involved in utilizing 3D in animation studios, many members of the TV and film production community have been hesitant to utilize the technology. Fortunately, however, newer technologies have made 3D graphics and filming possible for any production. With the new plug-ins and modeling technology, producers are able to create their 3D graphics and animations in as little as a week. Through the use of 3D filming, producers are able to give the viewer an even more exciting experience by escaping the boundaries of the camera and actual recorded footage. Through the use of virtual cameras, the scene can be completely explored and the watcher can become an even closer part of the story.

With the advent of 3D technology and the continued improvement of graphics, animators and producers are able to take the viewer on realistic journeys through hurricanes, murders, and even the human body. 3D graphics open up a world previously unexplored by the viewer. 3D filming and graphics have proven themselves capable of saving both time and money when it comes to creating realistic experiences such as films that give viewers first-hand looks at marine life under the waves, the internal functioning of the human body, and ancient sites such as catacombs.

Animation using 3D technology has shown itself to be highly useful in film production as well as in visual aids and marketing techniques, particularly when it comes to grasping and maintaining viewer attention. Not only do blockbuster films utilize this technology but so do museums, commercials and even courts as a means of demonstrating how a crime occurred. Because 3D technology and filming is able to accomplish so much, the only real limitation today is the imagination of the producer.
