Photography As A Hobby or Career

By Sasha Bradham Filkins

You have a very nice camera and some pretty decent equipment to go along with it. You can take a good picture but somehow, your images never come out looking like professional shots. This photography-related article will go into detail on how you can get the most out of your camera.

To create professional pictures of flowers, you can not rely on a natural background, a vase and a table. You need a solid colored background so that the focus is solely on the flowers. Try placing a white or black paper behind it to accomplish this.

Pay attention to your background. Your main focus should be on your object, but you should use the background to support it. Avoid any unnecessary distractions and clean your background to report the attention on your object. Play with lines and perspective in your background to compliment the shape of your object.

If you are serious about getting great shots, then consider investing in a tripod. Tripods are particularly great for one thing -- steadying your camera. This really comes in handy if you are taking long shots or shooting in low-light situations. A tripod is also invaluable for self-portraits and timed photography.

If you are taking pictures for anything from your family vacation to a friend's wedding, keep the rule of thirds in mind. Imagine that your viewfinder is divided into thirds by vertical and horizontal lines. Position your subject where these lines intersect rather than in the center of your photo, and you instantly create an interesting photo.

Do not forget to take pictures of yourself. You can still compose the background and choose how you want to use light and colors. Give instructions to a friend and look at the preview before you go pause. These pictures will be nice memories when you look back at them.

Use sunlight to its best effect by positioning yourself so that the subject is hit by the sun from the side. Also, the light tends to be 'warmer' in the early morning or late afternoon.

As stated in the beginning of this article, photography is a great way to bond with your children and build their self-esteem. Taking pictures together creates memories that will last for a life time. Apply the tips from this article to make the most of your next picture taking adventure with your children.
