Intriguing Information On The Raccoon Species

By Adriana Noton

The continent of North America is home to a fascinating creature that resides in the forest. They are cunning creatures, which are considered to be pest in urban areas. There is more to them than what people are led to believe. Scientist classify them as Mammalia of the Carnivora order. There are many species of a raccoon, which will be described below.

There is a species called the crab eating coon, which is found in several Latin American countries. It is an omnivore with a diet that consist of various sea creatures. Crabs are common meals, however it will also consume fruit. It shares the same physical characteristics as its counterpart in North America, but is smaller in size and slimmer.

A rather unique type of coon called the ring tail has a habitat in the forest of Southern California and Mexico. They are very agile and efficient hunters. There diets consist of other small animals and reptiles. Even birds can become prey when these coons are lurking. Their memory gives them the ability to remember solutions to problems when hunting.

Coons can also be found on islands. The Tres Marias is a tropical creature, which is large compared to the other species. Unfortunately, the creature is currently being hunted and no efforts are being done to stop it. Their numbers are already limited on a island small in size. If this trend continues, they will become extinct.

Coons are also found in the Bahamas also. These tropical creatures are similar to the other species, but are smaller in size. Scientist refer to this small size in animals as dwarfism. Although scientist have collected a large amount of data on the coons, they still are not sure of their origins. Some have suggested that they came from an island 1200 kilometers away.

There is another tropical species of coon, which came from the beautiful Barbados Island. The animal is now extinct due to human negligence. It is described as having dark fur without the typical rings around the eyes. It was also small due to the condition known as dwarfism.

Coons behavior can generally be described as nocturnal and social. The groups are small and limited to about four. Aggression between males and females has been observed to occur during mating season. They can also be territorial in regards to feeding grounds. Although different species of coon's diet varies, it generally consist of plants and invertebrates.

These animals can be found throughout North and South America. They have distinctive features, such as gray fur, long tails and black rings around the eyes. Their behavior is described as social and aggressive during mating season. The females are known to isolate themselves temporarily for this reason. They are also carnivorous mammals with diets that consist of snakes, lizards, birds and rabbits. Basically anything that they can get their hands on is fair game. They are also considered pest in developed areas and are actively exterminated in some cases. Although these creatures are scavengers, they're also magnificent animals, which should be protected. Enthusiast can research new ways of preserving the raccoon by using this information.
