We Bought a Zoo, based on a true story, is an impressive show that might, and should, bring in herds of spectators.
It focuses on a person who really did buy a zoo with 200 animals, on his kids and on the staff that became their other family.
Matt Damon plays the key character of Benjamin Mee, who, with his children, is slowly coming to grips with his wife's death. His child Dylan (Colin Ford) and girl Rose (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) still grieve, too. Just about on a whim, he finds what he believes is an ideal home for the family. The sole catch is that it has a tiny zoo. Rose's joy in her new surroundings cements the deal, even though Benjamin's brother (Thomas Haden Church) daunts him at each every opportunity.
Together with the zoo is a ragtag crop of zookeepers, including Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson), a feisty, doubtful employee whose first thought is always about the animals. Benjamin is overwhelmed at first, but with the aid of his support staff, he becomes more smitten with the animals.
Benjamin sinks everything he has in the zoo, much to the dismay of his teen child. Dylan doesn't know what to think of his new life or Kelly's bold, younger niece (Elle Fanning), who makes an attempt to start up a comradeship with the boy.
Showing the sort of can-do spark that only takes place in movies, Benjamin comes to a decision to desert the burbs of Southern California and get a run down zoo in the middle of nowhere.
At the very best this is a safe film to take the youngsters to. At worst, it's the kind of slovenly assembled, paint-by-numbers time waster that doesn't even seem in a position to hold the director's attention. This is the type of motion picture where a husky Matt Damon will put on a toque and heavy jacket to do some out of doors work. Another person will ask him why he is wearing the funny hat. Damon will then tell that person it is often because he's cold.
This at first appears a bonehead move, but guess what incorporates the zoo? Scarlett Johansson as the zookeeper! And for the grouchy teenage boy? Elle Fanning as her niece! I was lucky enough to watch We Bought A Zoo online.
