A Primer On Basketball Handicapping

By Bruce Webster

Basketball Handicapping has grown in popularity with the growth of online gambling. Being able to make informed betting decisions is important before laying down a wager on any game. There are some sound strategies many of the best gamblers employ before placing any bet.

Overlooking a current existing trend may prove detrimental to anyone's success as a handicapper. Trends are a critical part of any match-up analysis. There are so many trends one can look at that it can be almost impossible not to use some kind of trend. One trend often used by bettors is the match-up trend. Some match-ups happen many times over the course of any given season as well as historically. These historical trends can easily favor one team and seem to hold no matter the players or couches on those teams.

Home advantage has always been an easy one to look at when analyzing a game. There are some teams though that seem to excel and play their best basketball at home in front of their fans. These teams will have an incredible winning percentage at home regardless of the opponent. The reason for this home superiority can be difficult to pin point but the trend can be an important factor in placing a successful wager.

No matter how good or bad any one team is they all go through streaks and slumps. The basketball season is long and streaks and slumps effect every team. These streaky trends should not be overlooked by any handicapper.

All teams in a given year will suffer injuries to their players. Big injuries that bench a player for a significant portion of the season is important to know. Few realize that smaller injuries that may not bench a player will instead still affect their ability to play. These little injuries should also be factored into your decision.

Basketball handicapping can be a time consuming yet exciting hobby. Trends can be your friend so use them to your advantage. There is no secret recipe each handicapper will come up with what they believe are important stats and trends they follow. Injures should not be overlooked either when deciding when handicapping a game.
