Behind The Sexual Abuse Survivor Stories

By Lydia Carney

The experience a survivor has from an assault is very traumatic and hard to recover from. It is much harder to talk about the experience because of the personal details the victim has to reveal of him or herself. This takes a big deal of courage from the person and trust. Many support groups are available, through websites or phone support lines and their services offer survivors to participate and talk about their sexual abuse survivor stories.

There are also support groups available through centres and clinics against such violence. Their activities include meeting with the group on a weekly basis where they share their stories and take comfort in each other. This is a helpful process for the survivor to recover from the past.

Survivors who have been hiding their secrets for years, feel that when the right time has come, they can finally expose it. By doing so, it helps strengthen their self esteem and lead a normal life.

Most victims suffering from violence happen to be women. Incidents such as incest, rape and molestation occur during their childhood and adolescence. Many of them experience assault within their family or with their partners. Others get assaulted at their workplace.

The experience of this type of violence leaves the victims with feelings of violation and guilt. As a result, they are scared of sharing what they have gone through as it is personal and there is not so many people they can trust. This can lead to a situation where they tend to close up. This can lower their self esteem and cause them to feel worthless.

As a result of this exploitation, the survivors do not learn the true definition of sexuality in its positive context like others do. They feel they have not fully grown into it. Instead they feel they have grown apart from it. They may experience feelings of numbness or the inability to enjoy the intimacy as their spirit has been shattered. Once sharing their sexual abuse survivor stories, it may take them many years to recover.
