Top Tips for Getting Started as a Wedding Photographer

By Uzair Kharawala

Wedding photography is big business nowadays. Thats why so many are wanting to earn a living as a photographer (either part or full-time) want to become a wedding photographer. However , marriage photography is not all about taking some photographs on a day. It is more work than most individuals realise and before they know it, it is too late!

Here are my top wedding photography tips to help get started

People Skills

Wedding photography isn't just about clicking the shutter, it is about how you sort out folks when you are working under reasonably serious pressure. You are pretty much working against the clock to make sure you bag the pictures your customers expect and at the same time not delay events.

Plan for the Unexpected

Ever thought about what you would do if you couldn't attend a wedding due to some emergency, sickness or an accident? Unless you've got contingencies ready you'll find yourself in some serious trouble. Always have at least 2 other photographers who you can call upon in case of an emergency. Knowing a trusty network of similar-minded photographers is a must for each wedding photographer.

Insurance

You want 2 sorts of insurance: one is Public Liability and the other one is Professional Indemnity. Many venues will need a copy of your Public Liability as you are working on their premises. Professional Indemnity covers you for any negligence, loss of pictures in case of CF or SD cards going corrupt, or the hard drive failing. Please check the policy very fastidiously before signing up.

Being Arranged

You need to be intensely organized and time management is vital when doing both group shots and the couple. When it comes to the couple shots, ensure that the couple enjoy the most significant day of their lives with their family and friends and not with the cameraman! My sessions with the couple are no more than 15-20 mins after the ceremony and then again before the first dance (light allowing naturally).
