By Ian Knight

Bristol is a friendly city in the South West of England where you will find a lot on offer to see and do for everyone. In excess of nine million people visit Bristol annually. Its tourism is steadily increasing and the City is now one of the top ten destinations to visit in the UK. Bristol has great links to the rest of the UK and the world because of it's excellent motorway, rail and international airport links.

With its interesting mix of culture and heritage, Bristol is an extremely vibrant and fun City. Despite being heavily blitzed in World War 2, which left it with very little of its earliest 11th century architecture, the City is still full of character. In the old harbour area is the newly restored Victorian ocean liner SS Great Britain which is a must see for all those interested in maritime history.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the great Victorian engineer played a fundamental part in creating the floating harbour in Bristol. The twice daily tide has no influence on the boats in the harbour due to an ingenious locked gate system which traps water inside the central harbour permanently. Bristol's Clifton suspension bridge was also designed by Brunel, and has since grown to be an iconic symbol that visitors to Bristol should see. Offering amazing views over the ancient Avon Gorge and the City beyond, this wonderful bridge has to be seen to be believed. The bridge is best appreciated at night when it is lit up.

Bristol is a really popular place for a night out, it has a vibrant nightlife scene with a selection of cutting edge designer bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. Trip-hop is afusion of hip hop and electronica which developed in Bristol in the 80's and 90's and is still popular within the music scene today. Growing in popularity with tourists are the many graffiti murals, created by the world famous Bristol based street artist Banksy.

Host to a number of Westend and Broadway productions is the Bristol Hippodrome so if theatre is your thing this is one of the best.

You will find a wide range of shopping opportunities including Bristol's most recent shopping development at Cabot Circus boasts more than 120 shopping outletsand you will find hundreds more in the neighbouring Broadmead area. Additionally, there are a completely individual range of out of the ordinary and quirky independent outlets in the popular Gloucester Road district.

The Bristol Harbour Festival happens during Julyand is amongst the biggest free festival events in the UK. Currently in its 40th year, it is Bristol's most significant cultural event with various music, street theatre and markets.

A Balloon Fiesta at Ashton Court is another popular event which takes place annually in August. The skies over Bristol and the surrounding countryside are transformed with a riot of brightly coloured hot air balloons and the event boasts a variety of family activities including camel racing and camel racing.
