The Facts On An Art Gallery

By Frank Hayes

A place where contemporary art is placed on display for sale or exhibition is called a contemporary art gallery. The term art gallery is often used to refer to an art museum, rooms that display art in any type of museum or any kind of long or large room. There are numerous galleries across the world that display work from various genres.

Most of these places regularly switch out the works that they feature. It depends on the gallery how often this is done, but usually it occurs every couple of months. Even with smaller sized galleries, international and national artists may have their work displayed. This could range from sculptures to photography, mixed media to paintings.

At galleries, the paintings and photography works are often hung on white walls. Usually they are spaced out to allow the viewer to look at each piece with very little distraction from surrounding pieces. Most of these facilities are free of furniture and have plenty of standing room to allow for large groups to collect in the space during events. Sculptures and mixed media works may be displayed in glass cases and on white tables or columns.

Whether the piece is placed on the wall or displayed on a stand, it is usually accompanied by a card that includes details. This includes the name of the piece and the artist, as well as the price, if the item is for sale. Depending on the work, background information, such as the materials used or location of production, may be included. Works are set out for people to see, most are not meant to be touched or otherwise handled.

Most contemporary galleries are commercially or privately funded. Commercial facilities are for-profit and privately owned organizations that display contemporary art. These places are usually operated by cities, national or local government, churches, cities, art collectives or non-profit organizations.

Often, galleries are made together in large centers. A popular example is the Chelsea district located in New York. A number of these places are found in large urban locations, but even in small towns there tends to be at least one facility of this sort. Usually they are open for free admission to the public, but some places do require appointments.

An art gallery is a facility designed to display artwork for the purpose of exhibition or sale. These facilities are located all around the world and range in many respects. Typically, they are free to the public, include a changing list of featured artist and serve as a blank canvas for artists to share their work, regardless of the mediums applied.
