Eric Clapton, Slash and Jimi Hendrix - Take Your Pick!

By Charlie Walker

Almost every school child will have those wistful dreams of being a rock and roll God and emulating their musical icons that sit immortalized in posters on their bedroom walls while they're young. They argue about whom the undisputed king of the guitar is when they're infants and it's more often than not a debate that continues well into adulthood. Who are the most popular, well known and influential though that regularly make it to the top of these lists?

No list of this kind can be even remotely complete without mentioning Eric Clapton. Despite the fact his musical career commenced many years ago he is still extremely popular and widely acclaimed as one of the most talented blues guitarists ever to walk the earth. Some of his biggest hits include White Room and Cocaine and we're proud to say he's a born and bred British man.

The accolades achieved by Eric Clapton are numerous and you could compile an entire list dedicated solely just to them! They include: 17 Grammy awards, three inductions into the Rock and Roll hall of fame and also a CBE which was awarded to Clapton in recognition of his services to the world of music. His ride to the top was far from smooth though as he was an abuser of alcohol and drugs. As a result of this and his struggles he founded a medical centre for recovering alcoholics and substance abusers, only adding to his status and unrivaled popularity.

Jimi Hendrix is another firm favourite cementing himself at the top of these sorts of lists the world over, he too suffered a bumpy ride during his life and died a young and tragic death having been known for drinking, drugs and violence in addition to his music. His success was massive and his impact as an electric guitarist unrivalled, an impressive feat seeing as he was only exposed to the music mainstream for four years. His group The Jimi Hendrix Experience achieved phenomenal success after a relatively slow start and he and Eric Clapton remained friends up until Jimi's death in September 1970.

Slash is also known and revered as one of the most influential and talented guitarists of all time achieving success both as the front man of the band Guns N Roses and also as a solo artist. His list of achievements is a long one and he's featured on numerous lists, shows and stages earning him well deserved critical acclaim world wide. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
