Online Dating: How to Break the Ice

By Michelle Smith

Online dating may be more convenient than traditional dating but it still works the same way as with the latter. It still follows the same etiquette and in many instances, striking a conversation may take more effort and guts especially when it is the person's first time. If you're new to online dating and you're feeling anxious when it comes to striking a conversation with other site members, then here are some tips to break the ice:

1. Discuss something about their About Me section

Why would you look further if you can already start the conversation from the person's profile? Look for interesting facts about the person and talk about them. Don't just throw in questions, learn to listen well, and engage yourself in the conversation, giving your points-of-view.

2. Add some humor

A sense of humor would definitely make everything light. It can even hide your feeling of anxiousness. Cracking a joke or making some funny remarks can be a good ice breaker. This can be pretty easy though for people who are naturally funny. If you think you have a dry sense of humor, you must be cautious in trying to be funny as you may end up offending the person or appear to be really awkward. You can try reading books about humor and watch funny shows to improve the comical side of you.

3. Ask open-ended questions

One sure way of ending a conversation too quickly is asking closed-ended questions. These are questions that are often answered by yes or no. Steer away from this type of questions. You may start with topics that are safe to discuss with such as personal interests, hobbies, and more.

4. Discuss current events

You don't have to know every minute detail of the event. You simply just have to know what's going around. If you're talking to a person whose home country is different from yours, then discussing current events would be a good chance to know where the person is coming from.

5. Plan your perfect date together

You should only talk about this if both you and the other person are already in the stage of wanting to get to know each other better. Tell the other person how you wanted to spend the day with him/her. Exchanging ideas about your perfect date is a great way to make each other feel more at ease.
