A Review On The History Of Alaska

By Marcy Becker

Geographically, Alaska is the largest of all states in the United States of America. The region has a long, interesting and a fascinating anecdote but one, which at times its inhabitants do ignore. From the major series of events that have accrued over time, the history of Alaska is one to be told to the future American children.

The first inhabitants of the region were the Paleolithic families, who moved from Bering Land Bridge between 16,000 BC and 10,000 BC and made their settlement in the western side of the land. During this time, the land was mainly inhabited by the Inuit tribes and a huge group of Americans from India. The first European and Russian influence on the region began at the dawn of the 18th century.

After establishing a settlement in the state, Russia saw it worth that the territory was the best region for fur trade and within no time, it had established fur business posts. A little while later, the land went through a bad season of over hunting and this brought a decline in the fur trade. Seeing the loss that came about, Russia decided to sell the state to the United States of America bringing an end to the Russian American Company.

The Russian fur merchandisers had the ability to establish a reasonable and close rapport with the native tribes. However, this was a common phenomenon only in some few places where they settled as the native tribes usually got into hostility and ever-growing conflicts. There were many skirmishes seen between these Russians and Aleut tribes.

From a genuine political perspective, Russia was not the only state that had an interest to claim this state as Spain sent its expedition crew to the region from Mexico. Historical statistics shows that they had several stopping points and gave new names to several things; this was in 1775. Over a decade later, Spain sent another exploration troupe with intent to find a Northwest Passage, a season in which they got the opportunity to learn the Tlingit tribe and its way of life.

There is a propaganda that the Russian never got into sales liaison with the United States but instead rented the state out to US for a span of a hundred years. Others say that the deal between the US and Russia was because of bribery between the two parties. In real sense, Russia got into a trade agreement and sold the state to USA.

The major reason why Russia never wanted to colonize and let its influence besiege the land was due to financial constrains that has hardly hit the Russia. They exchange rate was $7,200,000, which Russia agreed to take in exchange of the great land; Russia had constantly gotten low returns from its investment in fur trade. Because of the continuous financial challenges, Russia had nothing left but only a choice to let the land go to the side of the United States of America.

The history of Alaska stipulates that after the Americans took over it, it called it the Department of Alaska. In between 1884 and 1912, USA changed to Constituency of Alaska. In 1912, the state gained its full territorial status.
