Applying Silk Painting Supplies To Produce Beautiful Neck Wraps

By Faith Lynch

A technique that began in Asia, applying paint to the sheer fabric is a highly desirable works of art. People enjoy these works because they can be painted upon, and worn around the neck or head. To start this type of unique art, using the proper silk painting supplies is very important, even for a professional.

Dyes are the essential ingredient necessary to bring this fabric to life. Of course, you can use regular paints, but these methods cause hardening of the fabric and make them undesirable to wear. Using dye on this delicate fabric is much better, but there are reasons to be careful with dye. Because runs so freely, it can easily become an artistic nightmare.

There are four different types of dyes. One is a dye type that is fixed into the fabric using steam. It is the most popular because you cannot feel anything on the silk. The colors are also vivid. Liquid dye is dropped onto the silk or sprayed. The colors are not very bright, but they also do not leave any texture on the fabric.

Water based paints are another type of medium to apply to this fabric. They are water based and dry with a hot iron. The colors can be dull and there is noticeable texture left on the material. A final dye is instant dye, which can dry quickly once it is applied to the fabric. Art instructors use this type with young children since it dries fast.

Resist is another material necessary to help the dyes set in their proper place. Resist is a form of painted glue that is put onto a pattern before applying the dye. It also keeps the dye from running off into areas where the color is not needed. Resist is easy to apply, but remember to apply it evenly and not leave any open spots. Open areas will allow dye to run freely.

To speed up the drying process, try using a hair dryer. A hair dryer is the fastest way to dry your artistic creations and the material itself. Moreover, you can also use a hair dryer to dry the resist on the fabric so you can apply the color. If you find a spot where dye is running, use the hair dryer to dry it up and then clean it off.

The easiest way to get your delicate fabric canvas set up is to use a stretching frame. What this frame does is stretch out the fabric to give you ample room to make your creation. Additionally, a stretching frame keeps wrinkles out of the fabric and helps with drying time. Stretching frames can be homemade or purchased at a local hobby store.

With all the designs available online, there is no end to what you can create on your fabric. Purchase your silk painting supplies online or a local hobby store. Whenever you begin your project, the first thing to do is to put your pattern down first. It is your guide to keep your colors correct and create beautiful artwork.
