How To Make Different RC Tank Tracks

By Gloria Gardner

Many people wonder how to build RC tank tracks. There are several techniques on how to do this and they are pretty simple to master. Most of them can be built using materials that are easily available and with no prior skills.

The bicycle chain track is made from wooden treads connected using aluminum pop rivets to two bicycle chains. This track is not very durable but it is cheap and easy to make. Masonite is the material used for the treads because it has a good grip and it is easily available. A five foot chain is quite cheap and three are required as well as 144 Rivets. You should be able to afford all the materials without feeling a pinch in your pocket.

Another type of track is the treadmill. To make a treadmill track you need wooden treads and a treadmill belt. These two components are attached using glue and brads. Spare treadmill belts can be found from gyms or they can be bought from local stores. Wood should be available from scrap.

A better model of the track from a bicycle chain is a roller chain track which is made using only one chain in the middle of the track. To move the track a drive sprocket is used. Wooden, masonite or plastic treads are connected to the chain by use of rivets and screws. It is recommended to use 0.75 inch link chains for the heavy tanks.

As an alternative to roller chains you can use plastic conveyor chains. No construction is need with these chains but this advantage also comes with a price. This plastic track costs more than all the materials for other track systems. After purchasing the belt links and sprockets all you need is to mount the track on the tank.

Other rc tank tracks that could be made at home include the molded track, hinge track, and the chain and bolt track. There is a wide range of materials and techniques that can be used to make different track systems. There is nothing as fun as building a track and watching it roll into glory.
