Ideas For Affordable Framed Artwork

By Lucile Jacobs

Nothing can liven up a room quite the way a piece of art can. Good art can be expensive, so if you're not making a lot of money, you probably find that the wall that begs for some kind of decoration has to stay bare for a while so that you can pay the bills first. With a little creativity, however, you can create a stunning focal point in your room with affordable framed artwork. There are different ways to do this.

One of the first things you can do is to look in places other than art galleries to find original art. For example, the students at your local art school may sell their work to you for a couple of bucks. Your investment may turn out to be a wise one too. That scruffy student may very well become a renowned artist whose work sells for thousands. Modern history is also filled with examples of scruffy art students who became scruffy rock stars and whose early work would now sell for millions.

You may also find beautiful originals at flea markets or wherever street artists gather. If you're traveling somewhere, make a point of scouring the local arts and crafts markets for pieces. You will get a great memento of your travels and you can tell your guests about the exotic destination where you purchased that beautiful painting on your wall. Don't worry about having to lug around a piece of art in your luggage. Simply mail it to your home address or to someone who can keep it until you return.

For something colorfully abstract, you can't beat children's art. Frame those strange drawings that your kid made in kindergarten or beg some drawings off the kids of your friends and family. Not only is there sentimental value in a drawing made by a child you love, but seeing the world through that child's eyes will delight anybody who looks at the artwork.

Instead of original pieces, you may also opt for prints. Art museums usually sell posters of the works that they exhibit, so that you have a beautiful memento of your visit. Movie or theater posters are great visually too. You may be able to get these from cinemas or theaters themselves.

Another option is to have prints made of photographs that you're particularly fond of. These can be pictures from your travels or simply informal snapshots of moments in your life. While they're usually striking enough on their own, you may add interesting effects with photo-editing computer software or simply by printing the photographs in black and white instead of in color.

There is no law that says you should only display paintings, photographs or sketches in frames. Framed sheets of interesting wrapping paper or fabric can be equally striking. Alternatively, box frames are one of the greatest ways to create striking pieces of decor. Use them for displaying objects like shells, feathers, pretty stones, your grandfather's war medals or even a favorite piece of clothing from your childhood.

Instead of focusing on affordable framed artwork, you may also focus on the frames themselves. A beautifully ornate frame can do wonders even on its own. Simply place it around a mirror or for something quirky, display them with nothing in them and let visitors admire their beauty.
