My Yuletide Experience Together With The Children Stricken With Cancer

By Alaric Sowerby

Within the years that I have enjoyed, there's one encounter which has left a long lasting lesson in my existence. It was the time when I had Christmas with the children that acquired cancer.

Many individuals should agree with me that Christmas is best enjoyed by kids. I recall a passage in the Bible that says, "Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them. For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children." I think that Jesus may truly want people to enjoy, particularly the kids, during His birthday.

On the other hand, only a few kids are rather thrilled during Christmas time. There happen to be those that are caught up in some war. There are likewise those who don't have their own friends and family with them and then there are those who are ill. Among the many types of ailments in the world, cancer is among the worst ailments for a kid to have. It hinders kids to play, to go to school, to have a normal life and often it hinders children to live.

When I had the opportunity to enjoy Christmas with these kids who are suffering from cancer, it transformed my view about life as a whole. Most of us may believe that a dying or very sick kid will never enjoy Christmas. On the contrary, this wasn't the image I noticed amongst these kids. They simply enjoy Christmas just like they weren't ill. It was like as if, Christmas day itself was really a present to appreciate more than costly toys, personalised Christmas cards or great tasting food. This has made me consider that perhaps that was exactly why Jesus liked kids. This was because children can see over and above suffering. It was simply because kids can live no matter how complicated situations are. This was because kids do not hesitate celebrating Jesus' birthday no matter how hard life gets.

People today get annoyed at numerous things. We come to feel bad when our expenses are more than our earnings or when our boss does not choose the business Christmas cards layout that we created or if the traffic is quite heavy. All of these are just small things compared to what a kid with cancer needs to go through every day.

Sharing Christmas with all these kids has not only shown me the very best Christmas present that was given to us but at the same time how we should live our lives. Our day-to-day lives could be full of difficulties yet we must stay strong and live life exactly how it should be lived.
