Shy and retiring X factor contestant Jahmene Douglas is many people's pick to win this year's competition, but it has been revealed that the reluctant star is still grieving for his older brother Daniel, who died in tragic circumstances three years ago.
An insider close to the family told Heat magazine of how difficult the X-factor experience had been for him without his older brother there to support him. "It's still very sensitive for him and right now all he wants to do is focus on his music and the competition. His family life is complex and he doesn't have contact with his father."
His father, Eustace Douglas, is currently serving a 15 year sentence for the GBH and rape of his Jahmene's mother Mandy Thomas back in 2003 at their family home in Bath, when he was just 11 years old.
Jahmene's mother and father had been together for 18 years before the attack took place, but a friend of the family revealed that: "He terrorised the family; his dad was a nasty piece of work. It's no surprise that he has confidence issues".
Jahmene and his family have gone through a lot by anyone's standards, but the bond between his mother, his two younger brothers, his younger sister and himself has never been better. He told the sun that: "Our struggles are what make us stronger, and I hope I can become an inspiration to those still suffering".
Religion is very important to Jahmene, who is a devout Christian. He has been able to draw immense strength from his Christian faith which has helped him through the difficult times. "His faith is really important to him. The loss of his brother was the main reason why he turned to religion".
Jahmene was previously awarded the title of 'Swindon's Got Talent' winner in 2010, an award which saw him sing the lead vocals for a charity song by Reach Inclusive Arts, aimed at helping to involve more disabled people in creative and cultural activities.
Jahmene has stolen the hearts of the judges and viewing public alike, ever since his first nervous performance on the hit talent show just a few weeks ago. And despite (or maybe because of) all the sadness and adversity that has befallen him in his short life, he seems to have a real honesty about him that reaches out to people and maybe, just maybe, will be enough to make him the Britain's Got Talent champion 2012.
