David Sarti is an interesting man. Ever since I have watched this show of Doomsday Preppers I have examined his youtube channel and found all sorts of very good information. He is a very jolly, friendly man who possesses a need to teach others. Sadly, he has stumbled upon some hardship these days, having had his right to bear arms taken away by the state after a mishap with a doctor examination. It's an absolute disgrace and I wish him the best but I'd still like to look at the methods that he addressed in the show.
1. Electromagnetic pulse
The show went over the probability of an EMP event triggered by solar flares, referencing the 1859 Carrington Event for instance. It was the only solar flare of huge scale which has happened since the introduction of electrical energy, however there are reports of solar flares having transpired before. By inspecting ice cores that were drilled from areas where snow never melts (such as Antarctica) climate reports have revealed that solar flares of a Carrington event level happen approximately every five centuries.
However, smaller events can occur several times each century hundred, and other events in 1929 and 1960 were reported, coinciding with radio disruption. In 1989, a solar triggered a rolling blackout in Quebec, however it was restored in 9 hours.
2. Trucking industry
David is especially concerned with the trucking sector coming to a halt. A lot of cargo in America is delivered by overland shipping and in the instance that an EMP were to disturb truckers we would be experiencing the all too familiar three days of grocery food problem
If the 1989 solar flare event is any indication, this is not a valid fear. While the power is interrupted during the solar flare, it does not destroy the electronic products. In the case where a solar flare were to strike and trucking were to be interrupted for a day, it would have a negative impact, however it wouldn't endanger national stability in the long term
3. Storage in Drums
David had a pretty intriguing storage process for his food. He was focused chiefly on dehydrated items like corn as well as beans, sealed in 55 gallon drums. So as to avoid mold, he threw in many hand warmers in every drum to soak up the oxygen.
There is a big difference in the oxygen absorbers that you would find in a package of store-bought beef jerky or vitamins for a good reason. You can find food grade preservative chemicals and non-food grade preservative chemicals. There is no telling what may be draining into David's food supply.
4. Farming and food supply
David has a very extraordinary homestead going on in this episode. For those who are fortunate enough to live in a rural area with rich soil and a temperate local climate, homesteading is probably the only safe technique that can maintain a large group of people. It is unlucky that David lives alone. His farm could be a great place for a community if the SHTF.
6. Protection
The standard of David's property and products is a dual edged sword, however. With such an incredible store of food, weapons and ammunition, David's homestead makes an attractive target to hungry raiders. Though he has obtained a level of protection with his spiked wire and dogs, these can be no match for an armed and organized team.
8. Keeping Contact
The concept of operating a HAM radio is quite intriguing for a post SHTF world. Even though it is unlikely that an EMP could destroy all of the world's radios, to be able to talk will be essential if the power grid were to go off for some other reasons or if centralized government were to be destabilized. If it could get a few people to help David guard his farm it would be wonderful too.
9. Health issues
The main criticism that NatGeo's professionals has is the state of David's health. I am in complete agreement - he's about to have a problem guarding his homestead successfully at his body weight. He is under the impression that he requires surgery so as to lose it because of joint aches.
One of the main advantages of paleo diet programs is the reduction of inflammation. David would be able to aid his mobility and move more with the aid of such programs. In addition, low-carb paleo variations work perfectly for slimming down. It might not be the end all be all for his health issues however, it would be a good start.
