What Are Pandora Charms?

By Anita Hale

Pandora is a popular jewellery brand that comes from Denmark. Nowadays Pandora is most recognised for its range of charms and related charm jewellery. At time of writing, Pandora has made more than 800 different types of charm which have been sold throughout fifty different countries. It also regularly turns out a selection of other kinds of jewellery, including rings, necklaces and watches.

The corporation's beginnings stem from the couple Per Enevoldsen and his wife, Winnie. Per laboured as a goldsmith and by 1982 they opened a jewellery shop together in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. Per and Winnie repeatedly travelled to Thailand on the hunt for jewellery to sell by means of their Danish shop.

By 1984 they realised that it was better to focus their business efforts in wholesale as opposed to simply being a retail outlet. Encouraged by their visits to Thailand, they set about opening a production facility overseas. This was branded Pandora Productions. They hired Lone Frandsen to design their own jewellery range.

The business had become recognized as simply Pandora by 1987, and manufacturing was brought back to Per and Winnie's home country with headquarters based in Copenhagen. During the same year they resolved to discontinue all retail activity. This consequently meant that Pandora was now purely a jewellery designer and wholesale dealer.

Pandora gained an additional jewellery designer in the form of Lisbeth En Larsen in 1996. She worked with Lone Frandsen to help design and define a style of jewellery that would be unique to the brand Pandora.

But it was in 2000 that the company experienced its truly defining moment. That was the year that Pandora launched its introductory collection of charms and bracelets. It turned out to be a opportune decision seeing that charms were coming back into vogue. However, it was Pandora that spear-headed the campaign by using a strategy of "one charm for every unforgettable moment in your life." The Pandora charms were manufactured with fine quality metals including sterling silver and gold. Furthermore, Pandora revealed a range of murano glass charms that were handcrafted from the Venetian island of Murano in Italy. The mixture of fine quality materials and the detailed choice of different designs available suggested that these charms were an affordable treat for any buyer.

Included in this was the point that each and every charm was developed using Pandora's branded threading functionality. This in effect meant that every charm had to be screwed over the threaded ends of the Pandora bracelet to secure it. This was a clever decision by Pandora as it ensured that users would have to use the official Pandora bracelet to secure their charms, as they would not fit onto any rival brand.
