By Harold Walker

On February 22 of every year, National Margarita Day is celebrated. The margarita has become so popular, they named a day after it. So next February 22 make your favorite frozen margarita recipe in honor of National Margarita Day.

But we set out to try and find out who invented this classic beverage ? We did a lot of research, and found no official inventor of the margarita, yet a number of stories of those claiming they had first created this popular concoction. One story claims that in 1941, Don Carlos Orozoco was experimenting with some new mixed drinks in his cantina named Hussong's. Don Carlos put tequila, orange liqueur and lime into a salt rimmed glass.

On that day, the daughter to a German ambassador named Margarita Henkel was in Hussong's and Don Carlos offer her a taste of his new concoction. He then named his creation the margarita, because Margarita was the first to sample his new drink.

Another story says that a bartender from Mexico City named Willie, in 1934 created and named his version of a margarita after his friend Marguerite Hemery. Yet another tale on who invented the margarita has Carlos Herrera creating a margarita in his Tijuana restaurant in 1938. Carlos invented the concoction for Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol but tequila, yet she did not like the sour taste of tequila.

Yet another story is that Margarita Sames mixed up a margarita in 1948 for some house guests, one of which was Tommy Hilton, who put the drink on his bar menu at all of his hotels.

It really does not matter who invented the frozen margarita recipe or the classic margarita, because it is the most popular tequila based drink in the states, deserving of the National Margarita Day.

Since those first margaritas were created, there has been many flavor variations over the years. Some of the newer margarita flavors are mango, raspberry, pomegranate, pineapple and many more.

Having National Margarita Day in February is a reminder for the people living in the colder states that they will soon be enjoying their favorite frozen margarita recipe in the warm sunshine sooner than later.
