The Benefits Of Head Turbans

By Freda Watts

Men have worn head turbans for thousands of years. They are more common in parts of Asia of than anywhere else but can also be found in Africa. Nobleman usually wear them but sometimes women do too, after shaving their hair off. Many religious people wear them, this is especially true of Muslims and Sikhs.

Sikhs wear turbans as a mark of respect towards their god, they also wear them to prevent sand from getting in their hair. Catholics, Hindus and Jews sometimes wear head gear too but only when they are in a church. Sikhs however, wear them all the time because they believe that God is everywhere. It also help Sikhs to distinguish themselves from other members of the population. They don't cover their beards because it is easy to keep them clean.

The hear gear was worn originally to denote someone's higher class in society. It separated them from the people of the lower classes. These days, all Sikhs wear them because they want to banish class distinctions. Every Sikh was named Singh or Kaur, as part of this effort to make everyone seem to be from the same class.

The colour of turbans has no special meaning. Young people tend to prefer blue, while the elderly favour white. Red and green are unpopular. The main reason for covering the head is to keep the hair clean, the colour just isn't important, it is a matter of individual choice.

Sikhs don't cut their hair because they believe it is a gift from God. They want to live in the way God made them and respect what they have been given, so cutting their hair would contradict that. Some people think that if you don't cut your hair, then it will just grow and grow. But Sikhs say that the hair, eyebrows and beard stop growing at a certain length because the body knows when to grow and shed it's hair.

Keep your long can be good for your health too. It can protect against the sun's ultra violet rays, helping to prevent skin cancer. It can also keep you cool during the Summer and warm during the Winter. It insulates air between head and hair.

Turbans have been around European countries for many centuries. However, they have never been as popular as in Asia. In places like Great Britain, they are usually worn for fashion reasons rather than because of any religion. People in Europe tend to prefer to wear hats.

People who have had chemotherapy in order to fight cancer wear turbans. This is because their treatment has lead to hair loss. It is especially true of women but men are usually more comfortable with baldness. It's also common for cancer patients to wear baseball hats, caps and night scarves.

Head turbans can be controversial. The soccer authorities in Quebec banned anybody from wearing them during matches due to safety issues. However, the governing football authority repealed the ban but said that if you wanted to wear one then it must be the same colour as your football shirt. This is because sometimes the colour can clash with the shirt of the opposing team and make it difficult to referee the match.
