Senior Products Provide Hours Of Entertainment

By Erica Holms

As people get older, there are fewer and fewer activities they can do. Many people are not able to go for a drive or go to the gym like younger people. So many family members take entertainment and the access to it for granted. In order to make your loved one as comfortable and entertained as possible, there are products for the elderly that are designed to keep them entertained.

Books printed in large fonts are ideal senior gifts for anyone who enjoys reading. Seniors can keep up on current events with a subscription to a newspaper. Another good gift is a magazine subscription. Using a magnifying glass makes it possible to read those publications that are only printed in small fonts.

Communicating with family friends is another type of senior entertainment that often gets overlooked. Help a loved one by finding an address book with pages that have lines spaced far apart. Print contact information in large block leaders that are easy to read. The book may be kept near the phone for easy access. Crocheting is one way that many seniors like to pass the time. This is an activity that gets more difficult and frustrating as the hands become less steady. Craft stores supply a variety of devices that make it easier for seniors to grip the crochet hook.

Gardening and playing cards are two more senior hobbies that are popular. Puttering around in a small garden is a great way to spend some time outdoors. Specially adapted gardening tools are ergonomically shaped to fit comfortably in the hand. These tools are easier for someone with arthritis to use and allow seniors to continue pursuing their interest in garden work. A specially designed deck of playing cards allows people with poor vision to correctly identify each individual card. Each suit is shown in a different color and the numbers are printed in extra large fonts.

Watching television is a favorite pastime for many people, but watching a show may be uncomfortable for those who have poor vision or hearing. Special remote control units are built into large boxes and feature large buttons. These are simple to use and difficult to lose track of because they are so big. With special senior aids designed to amplify the sound, watching television can be a more enjoyable activity. Any of these senior living aids help improve quality of life.
