A Guide On How To Hold A Violin Correctly

By Paulette Mason

A violin is a string instrument which is also known as a fiddle. Unlike the guitar, it only has four strings in it. Usually, it is played using a bow, which is made up of a stick and a ribbon. There are different ways or posture it can be played, it is either in a standing position or seated. Before, violins are only used for romantic music, but today some bands already used violins in a pop rock genre.

Proper positioning is one of the key role for better performance. This also reduces the risk of strain injuries. If you wonder how to hold a violin correctly and properly, you have come to right place. In this article, you will learn to properly position it depending on your body size and other factors.

The stance and the fiddle position is highly important. If you are standing, you have to set your feet shoulder width apart. You can centralize your weight equally on both of your feet . Whether you are standing or sitting, you have to straighten your spines while keeping your shoulders relaxed and leveled.

To position your violin, you have to carry it without elevating your left shoulder. If possible, it should stay flat without support from your left hand. Make sure that you do this properly because if not, it may induce a negative result on your shifts.

There are two types of chin rests, the left plated chin rest and a center plated one. This works perfectly well, depending on how long your arm is. If you have long arms, a left plated one will work perfectly for you. Otherwise, if you have short arms, you can use a center plated instead.

A chin rest can be very useful if you are to use the fiddle in a longer span of time without having too much discomfort. The chin rest help ensures that your jaw has a comfortable place to sit on. This also provides a distance from your jaw to your collarbone.

If you still have trouble holding your fiddle, you might have a fiddle which has a size that does not fit for you. Always remember, that it is better to use a small violin than those big ones. Also, some techniques can be learned faster in those small instruments and it is much safer too.

To avoid tension in your chin, you have to maintain a good balance of the violin in your shoulder. If you keep gripping on it using your chin, there is a possibility that it will strain your neck and can cause serious injuries. This is not good because it may hinder your performance at the end of the day.

Always remember that, the most important factor you have to consider in holding a violin is comfort. Try to use the these tips and see if it works for you. You can also experiment with different methods and revise it as long as it makes you more comfortable and improves the quality on how you play.
