Figurative And Genre Art And Their Impact To Modern Society

By Janine Hughes

Art has its own language. It brings out a message but does not speak. It evokes emotions at its stillness. That sublime moment you experience when you are glued at staring a wonderful painting for instance is something that is difficult to explain. Even if science has a way of explaining the phenomena, the appeal that different individuals has for a single work remains something to ponder upon.

Da Vinci, Picasso, and all other great artist of their times may no longer be present to witness the advancements of our society. But their works which embody their era surely remain popular. Figurative and genre art are among the classification that stood proud until today. Many works including paintings and sculptures remain an attraction and inspiration for modern day artists.

To an untrained eye, figurative and genre may just look the same. Their themes, being that of ordinary human experience and practices are the same. They both center on people and the things that they do. What differentiates them however is the mode on how they are done. Genre art presents a clear image of a happening whereas figurative can be representational and can be done in abstract form.

There is no telling what exactly makes these works great. Some say it is the manner of painting. Others go for the materials used in creating the image. And then there are some who thinks that it all has something to do with the inner muse of the artist. All of these things can matter. We can never be so sure what has transpired in the mind of the artist during the creation. It could be any of these things or combinations of all.

Genre category is perceived by some as easy. You will just need to paint a common occurrence in the society after all. You can just sit down at some place, observe what people are doing and paint. But clearly, the greatest works of all times required more than clear observation in skills in painting.

Creating a great work of art requires more than just inspiration. It needs a combination of time, skill and passion from the artist himself. An absence of any of these factors can affect the overall quality of the output. We may never have seen the actual ways by how these masterpieces were created. But the way they get the attention of the people is enough of a proof on the thought and feeling poured down on them during the creation.

Personal bias can also affect the creation. If emotions are indeed used in creating the artwork, then it is easy to say that what the painter felt while doing his masterpiece shaped and curved some of the details of the image. Sometimes it can even be a combination of feelings and beliefs.

One great thing about the masterpieces we see at present is their varied interpretations. We can give meaning to them however we want it. The emotions that they draw out from individuals can affect the way we see it. Someone who sees a painting of aristocrats may find it elegant. Yet others may find it discriminating.

If you have seen an actual work done by the greatest artists of all times, you will get an idea why they are highly acclaimed like they do. Their beauty is more than just the image. The message and the emotion all have something to say.
