Information On Bow Ties For Men

By Mattie Knight

A bow tie is a special form of necktie that was first worn in early nineteenth century. According to many people, it is thought to have succeeded the cravat, which was used by Croatian mercenaries in the Prussian War. It became a staple formal male fashion by the mid-1880s. Bow ties for men continue to gain popularity in some societies. Since it was first introduced, it has been modified and changed a lot. They are becoming popular again in societies in which they were introduced.

The change to bow ties was not only in form but in function too. Its mass acceptance from the time it was introduced has been instrumental as it transcended its purely formal and traditional stereotype. At the time of its introduction, it was seen as attire purely meant for formal occasions, but that has since changed. Today, it acts in many capacities most of which were intended initially. For instance, it is worn in street styles, celebrity fashions, and even as a school uniform in some countries.

The rigid sartorial laws of former years do not apply anymore to these ties. They have become a fashion that people from both genders enjoy and are happy to be associated with. Any stylistically savvy person would be happy to include this piece of garment in their unique wardrobe any day of the year. Many celebrities like it and are seen every day wearing it in public occasions.

The tie has a ribbon, which is worn symmetrically around the collar in a manner as to create a loop in the two ends. Traditional versions usually come as strips of cloth for the wearer to tie themselves. The names commonly used to refer to them are freestyle, self-tie, and tie-it-yourself. On the other hand, ready-tied versions come already tied and one does not need to go the hassle of tying them.

There is a great variation in the kinds of fabrics used to make the product. However, the use of cotton, silk, polyester, or a combination of these fabrics has been common. When used in combination, the fabrics can be mixed in different ratios. Wool is more common in four-in-hand neckties. The ordinary shoelace knot is used to tie modern products.

Western societies are more accustomed to ordinary neckties. They are commonly worn at schools, business meetings, and formal functions. The bow tie on the other hand is slowly stealing the audience in fun-formal events like cocktail parties and dinners. A formal look can still be maintained by wearing the tie with a suit.

Today, two major types of this product are in existence. This two forms are ready-tied and tie-it-yourself. Ready-tied types are considered to be for people with little preference and experience in this line of products. They are viewed as armature in certain events and occasions. Ready-tied types may have clip-ons for clipping onto the collar. That way, they do not go around the neck when worn.

Self-tie models are further classified into two major groups, bat wing and butterfly or thistle. However, there are several other shapes in common use. The choice of the shape is usually an issue of personal preference and sense of style.
