Reasons To Choose Hemp Clothing

By Joshua Gray

Beautiful clothing is one of the joys of life all over the world. Many people like the soft feel of light weight fabrics for casual clothes, and they may choose cotton; if they are environmentally aware of the toxins used in raising this crop they may choose organic. However, they could have soft, natural garments and environmentally-friendly farming, too, if they knew the benefits of supporting hemp clothing manufacturers.

Cotton is grown around the world in mild climates, and it requires heavy pesticide and herbicide use. In fact, some statistics say that 50% of the pesticides produced go into growing cotton. Herbicides are used to ready the mature plants for machine harvesting. Unless people are paying a premium for organic clothing, they are supporting a toxic way of farming.

Especially in the developing countries of India, Africa, and South America, the health of the workers who labor in agriculture matters little. Many of the pesticides used on cotton are among the most toxic known, with documented health risks. The World Health Organization is trying to raise awareness of this problem, but many poor laborers are illiterate. They also may have little choice of employment and may not be able to opt for a safer work environment.

Hemp requires no pesticides in its cultivation. Although it is in the same family as marijuana, it is not a hallucinogen. This wonderful crop has been banned for years in many areas, but it is making a comeback - and it can't be too soon. Those who want to protect the world's waters from chemical pollution, take heed.

Hemp is naturally insecticidal. It grows densely so it crowds out weeds and needs no herbicides to thrive. Farmers who grow hemp don't have to ride around in great clouds of toxic chemicals, the use of which has made farming one of the most unhealthy professions. Farmers can protect the health of themselves and their families while saving money they have been spending on chemicals.

They can save on fertilizers, too. Nitrogen is produced by the hemp plant to enrich the soil without needing much outside help. This crop is often used as a rotation for fields that have been depleted by corn, cotton, or other 'hungry' plants.

It can grow in all 50 of the United States, being frost tolerant, suitable for many different types of soil, and requiring relatively little water. This is truly a miracle plant, which deserves much more exposure than it gets. By supporting hemp manufacturers of textiles and other goods, you can encourage the cultivation of this valuable crop.

You can find hemp clothes, linens, shoes, purses, wallets, and hats. You can buy hemp-based paint, plastics, fuel, and paper products. Hempseed itself is very good for you, and it yields a balanced oil rich in essential fatty acids. We need to tell everyone about this wonderful renewable resource.
