What You Should Know About Color Theory Paintings

By Raymond Gibson

Paintings have been around ever since the olden days. People had portraits made for hours unlike today with the availability of cameras all over. As much as people nowadays are not so keen on painting, it remains an art that is appreciated and valuable. It is a source of income for people and even a way of keeping memories for others. The article elaborates more about color theory paintings.

Most people only know the colors of the rainbow and think that they are the only ones in existence. However, there are a wide variety of colors, and they are categorized into different groups. First off, there are primary colors. These are the original colors and cannot be formed by mixing any other colors. Two primary colors put together to form a secondary color.

As much as primary colors are original and cannot be made from mixing other colors, they also come in different shades. This means there are diverse kinds of reds, yellows, and blues. Some shades are considered warm while others are cool. For example, a certain kind of red may appear dull but will always be considered warmer than any shade of blue.

Mixing two primary colors will result in a secondary color. The intensity and effect of the color will depend on the ratio of mixing and the colors used in forming the secondary color. For example, red and yellow forms orange. If the yellow is more than the red, the orange will be yellowish while if the red is more than the yellow the orange will appear reddish.

You may be wondering if it is really necessary to buy ready made colors if you can just mix them up yourself. You should not entirely depend on mixing colors by yourself. There are certain shades of color that are the only ready made and cannot be formed from mixing. Although some can be formed through mixing, buying them gives you an assurance of uniformity. You might lack the right proportions by mixing it yourself.

Greys and browns are known as tertiary colors. They are actually not as complicated as one may think. They are formed by mixing a secondary color with a primary color. The ratio used in mixing will determine the shade that will come up. The colors also used in mixing play a big role in the final shade that will come out. Different primary colors bring out different shades.

You should know that there are complimentary colors. The complimentary color of a primary color is the primary color left out when you mix the other two primary colors. Complementary colors are also there for secondary colors. These complimentary colors when placed next to each other appear to be brighter and more intense.

To make your work easier, you should make a chart to keep up with all of your discoveries. This way, when you want to make a certain color, you know what to mix and the ratio to mix it in. You also get to know the transparent and opaque colors and how to effectively use them.
