There Are Tremendous Benefits To Adult Dance Lessons Oklahoma Seniors Enjoy

By Virginia Rogers

Some seniors love retirement, and others find the transition difficult, especially if they don't have hobbies to entertain them. When most seniors grew up, exercising was something most often done by athletes. Some seniors have embraced exercising on treadmills and stationary bikes. Others hate the idea of repetitive exercise. For these older citizens, the adult dance lessons Oklahoma organizations offer can be the perfect alternative.

If the idea of losing strength and mobility as you get older bothers you, you should try dancing to get you moving and strengthening your leg muscles. The movement will make them stronger, but you will also be doing resistance training using your body as the weight instead of dumbbells. Those who run out of breath after a few minutes of moving around will see their endurance improve.

Increased flexibility is another great benefit of dancing. You have probably noticed that your knees and hips are stiff when you get up after sitting for an extended period of time. Arthritis is a common complaint among seniors. As you dance however, you stretch and move and get your joints working. Prior to your lessons, you will be required to warm up. This will stretch your sides, back, shoulders, and neck along with the muscles in your legs.

Another common problem many seniors face is isolation. Once you retire and don't go to work everyday, you can lose touch with coworkers. You don't have much in common with the ones you do talk to occasionally. Contemporaries are aging as well and can't always get out to socialize. A dance class is a great place to meet new people. You already share an interest in dancing.

Dancing is a wonderful way to use all your muscles. You may notice, after you have been dancing for several weeks, that your body has taken on a more toned and healthy look. You might not be mistaken for twenty-five, but you will look great for the age you are. You will walk taller, and feel more self-confident.

If you've been concerned about your weight, but haven't done anything about it, you will probably be pleased when you step on the scale. Dancing is more than good exercise. It's a great way to burn calories and lose extra pounds. Once you start losing, you'll feel more energetic. You may want to form a walking club with some neighbors or join the gym after all.

As you age, the idea of getting weaker physically is frightening, but the idea of losing mental agility is terrifying. The fear of Alzheimer's is never far from any senior's mind. There are studies that show dancing to be excellent for your memory. You have to focus your brain on the dance steps when you are doing them, and you have to remember them the next time you are out on the floor.

Aging well can be very challenging. You have to work on it to be successful. The happiest seniors stay active, challenge themselves mentally, and thank whoever they believe in for every day they have.
