Intriguing Facts About The Origin Of Japanese Cloisonne

By Jessica White

Different countries have something that they can be proud of regarding art. Japan, for instance, is very famous for its Japanese Cloisonne. This is a form of art whereby intricate designs are made by filling compartments with metal, soldering them and passing them through fire. Then, these objects are polished and either sold or used as decoration in homes. The metal that is mostly used is copper. This art has made Japan so famous in the world. The art is fascinating and the objects created are very stunning.

Traditionally, the technique was used to decorate small items like jewels, sword fittings, architectural ornaments, and water droppers among others. The art itself originated in China. Chinese artisans taught the Japanese people how to make ornamental objects using metal and fire. Japanese people learned everything about the art and became experts. Later, the art became so popular in America and Europe.

Since this art was only used to decorate small architectural objects, it was not used as an income generating art. However, around 1833, a former Samurai called Kaji Tsunekich from Nagoya, Omwari Province, thought of ways to generate revenue. He was thus forced to find additional income to supplement his little salary. This official thus obtained a piece of the art, took it apart and examined how it was made. He later produced a small enamel dish using this art.

By late 1850s, Kaji had become an expert in making objects and decorating them using this design. He later took on pupils and taught them the art. Due to his expertise, he was appointed the official maker and Warlord of the province of Omwari. The production of the decorative objects drastically increased. This intricate art became popular in the late 1850s and is still very popular today.

Nagoya and all the areas that surrounded it became so famous for their artworks. The artisans were very innovative, and they created so many patterns. Some of these patterns were so complex that people thought it was impossible. Other provinces and centers also started crafting. Later, every district in Japan was making these ornamental products.

From very simple beginnings in Nagoya, Omwari province in the 1830s, this complex art became widely known. During the late 19th century, this art greatly expanded and became the primary income generating activity in Japan. Additionally, Japan became a major exporter of the ornamental products to many parts of the world.

To preserve the culture and origin of this art, many museums have been set up in Japan to carry on the beautiful works. If you visit Japan, you will come across various ancient objects like sword fittings, bowls, and vessels among many others. These objects are amazing, and they clearly show where the unique art began.

Today, so many people from different states have adopted the art and are making many items using this beautiful design. You can also learn and decorate your home to make it have a Japanese feel. There are so many tutorials online that illustrate the whole process. However, the procedure is quite complicated, and it requires proper training.
