Are Crackers Just For Christmas?

By Ian Spence

It may seem just plain barmy to prepare for Christmas in the middle of summer but the long-term benefits are well worth considering. The majority of people only start planning their annual festivities in the latter months of the year, normally November or even December.

Smith developed the cracker in 1847 following a trip to Paris and a love for Chinese fortune cookies. During his visit to France, Smith became a fan of the sweets 'bonbons' which were wrapped in a twisted paper. Smith was also impressed by fortune cookies which contained a little message inside once you broke them.

Plan ahead and start early- The earlier you start planning for Christmas the better. It is a much more effective way of doing things if you spread your workload out across the year rather than squeezing it all in to one month.

Make a plan, or list, on what exactly you need and what has to be done before December 25. Who do you need to buy presents for? What decorations do you need? What food and drink do you require? Do you want Christmas Crackers? Are you going to delegate the responsibilities?

The cracker has even managed to set a record. The longest one in the world was made in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, UK on 20 December 2001, by the parents and children of Ley Hill School and Pre-School and it measured 63.1m (207ft) long and 4m (13ft) in width.

Dinner parties- While Dinner parties are often classified as dignified and decorous occasions they can also be mundane affairs. With this in mind, what better way to break the ice than using some crackers? Again, the style of crackers can be chosen to match the occasion and can fit in with a classy and co-ordinated feel to a dinner party.

And with Easter just around the corner, there's a good chance of setting a new trend and beating all previous records!
