My name is Nick Galante and I have been a Kauai family portrait photographer for over 25 years. I photograph families all over the island but prefer one special south shore beach. I have worked at this beach for so many years that I know what the sun will be doing every single day. Working at a familiar location all the time helps me to create the best possible family portraits.
My favorite job is the multi-family reunion. Many times this is the only time everyone has gathered in one place for many years. It is a special occasion and a perfect reason for a Kauai family beach portrait. A large family on the beach with a camera always brings out the best in people and offers great photo opportunities.
I market my photo sessions as a Kauai fun family activity rather than a stiff portrait session. Other than dinner or maybe a boat trip this is probably the best way for a large group to interact in a unique way. There is always the hey let's do the photo where I am holding you in my arms like we did when we were 18 type of thing going on and I love that. My main goal other than great photos of course is that everyone has a fun time."
I try to get the formal groupings done first as young children have little patience for this type of activity. As soon as the formal photos are done we are walking on the beach, jumping off sand cliffs or running through the surf. By that time the kids are not even thinking about the camera. Even though we are doing all these crazy things my most important consideration is that everyone stays safe. Grandma isn't running through the surf although many times she insists on it.
My lifestyle is built around the beach. I try to shoot only one family per day with at least part of the day reserved for enjoying the surf. Many nights my family and I will have dinner while watching the sunset at the beach. In recent years I have retired from a stressful management position for a government contractor and tried to structure my life around enjoying and working at the beach. I have managed to create a lifestyle that is fun and helps visitors produce great photos.
