Professional Photo Printing: What's The Huge Deal?

By Daniel B. Wiedeman

First of all, what do we mean by "professional photo printing?" It's not anything you'll find at your average drugstore or megamart. Professional printing is printing done properly: a thorough process undertaken by professionals who know and care about what they're doing. Professional photo prints could not be more different than mass-produced prints. A good photograph deserves the finest treatment possible, and that is professional printing.

Professional photo printing houses are focused on every step of the process. Let's say you've taken a really excellent picture. Which of these "printers" sounds like the best person for the job of printing it? An exhausted, un-trained clerk with no expertise in printing techniques? Or a completely qualified expert and true enthusiast? We can't speak for you - but we know which one we'd pick: the second one!

The printers at professional photo printing houses are invested in the end product, and this makes a difference. These people will stop at nothing to give you the best photo printing service possible.

Professional photo printing houses provide materials of the highest quality. The photo paper used there is of a better grade; it's thicker, heavier, and more durable. You will also have the choice of a gloss finish, a semi-gloss finish, and a matte finish. These are good options to have if you're planning on displaying a large print; paper prints need to be protected by glass, and this combined with a gloss finish can create reflections from a distance. Matte paper doesn't present this problem.

There are other, more unusual media also available at printing houses:

Metal photo prints - This edgy medium is weather-resistant, scratch-resistant, long-lasting, easy to mount, and most importantly, beautiful. At many photo printing houses, you can choose from a variety of metallic and matte finishes.

Leather photo prints - Unknown to many people, this interesting medium makes customizing leather pieces easy and fun. Most printers can print on wallets, purses, or sometimes jackets. Leather prints are also fun to hang on the wall - the unique texture throws visitors for a loop.

Canvas photo prints - Canvas is an excellent choice for large photographs, as canvas is a matte substance that needs no protective covering. Prints done on canvas don't fade easily; the coarse fibers absorb and protect ink. The canvas texture also has the effect of making your print look more like a painting than a photograph.
