Why Do People Get Canvas Photo Prints?

By Cathy T. Tocco

Canvas photo prints are, as one might guess, photos printed on high-quality canvas. "Why canvas?" you might say. Well, there are several big reasons. While paper is a more widely used photo medium than canvas, there are advantages to canvas photo prints. The "fabric look" makes for a gorgeous, complex effect. Its rough surface makes an Old World masterpiece out of a regular photograph. There's nothing else that makes a photo print look quite so special, whether you're putting it on your wall or giving it to a friend.

Also, if you're going big, you'd better choose canvas photo prints. Photo paper is lighter and less durable than canvas. It's also less absorbent, and therefore more likely to fade. To keep your print bright, you need to protect it, either with glass or a special varnish. Large paper prints also have to be mounted, as they are too delicate to hang alone. Canvas, on the other hand, absorbs ink, making your picture more durable, and it can be displayed very easily.

You can choose among cotton canvas, polyester canvas, and a combination of the two. Cotton canvas is made from natural fibers, while polyester canvas consists of plastic fibers. Pure polyester tends to be cheaper, but the absence of natural materials makes for lower absorbency. Cotton, on the other hand, isn't quite as cheap, but it absorbs ink more easily and consequently remains bright longer. A cotton-poly blend is the best way to go, as you get the best of both worlds, so be sure you find a company who offers it. Make sure, also, that the canvas you use has a neutral pH rating, to ensure your artwork stands the test of time.

Most companies will stretch and frame or mount your canvas photo prints for you, according to your preferences. Another option is to buy them rolled and stretch them yourself. However, this isn't the best idea unless you know how to stretch canvas. Remember, the employees are masters at stretching, framing, and mounting canvas. It's generally better to let the specialists handle it.

Whether the products of your professional photo printing are destined for your wall, your best friend's home, or an art gallery downtown, consider getting them done on canvas. No matter the occasion, your finished print will be an object of beauty that lasts more than a lifetime.
