Important Things About Bathtub Refinishing

By Gregory Baker

The cost of replacing your old and worn out bath tub might not look so high, but only on a first sight. You have to buy a new tub first, but there are some other, hidden costs here, starting with contractors, plumbers, tiles and material. Relining is another option. For this, an acrylic liner would be the best one, but it is not cheap solution. Bathtub refinishing is still the most affordable option.

If you choose a good service specialized for this job, you won't have to move your tub and all works will be done on-site. Surrounded areas would not be affected in any way, and there will be no hidden costs included. The final price will depend on the state of your tub. Some smaller repairs may be included in price, but larger ones will affect the total price.

When everything will be arranged, the works will start. First, everything has to be cleaned, all surrounded surfaces protected and all features temporarily removed. The ventilation should be set to vent. The first stage is sanding. This will remove imperfections and prepare the surface for spray-painting. Acid etching is sometimes required as well.

Before starting coating, all damages should be discovered and repaired. After that, another sanding is usually required. Two or three layers of paint is first sprayed on, and this serves as a primer. When this primer is completely dry, there will be another three or four layers of paint. Some contractors will come back in a day or two to apply another layer, but this final buffing is not really necessary.

Re-glazing costs are much lower than complete costs of replacing your bath tub. If you would like to find even more affordable solution, you could try to do it yourself. It could cut-out your costs in half, but you need to be aware of the fact you won't get the same quality. And for that, there are several very good reasons.

First, if you don't have professional equipment, it's really hard to get the professional results. Although it is possible to buy a tub refinishing kit, it doesn't include, for example, a paint sprayer. It is really hard to apply evenly any type of a coating using brush or roller, because in this case you are not dealing with perfectly smooth flat surface. Spray-painted surfaces look so much better.

Even the smallest damages have to be professionally repaired, using appropriate tools and materials. Tub sanding also has to be done professionally, and it is really difficult to do using a sand paper. You will have to buy protecting sheets, cleaning solution, sealant, brush and roller, paint and some other things, and total costs will probably be much higher than your think.

At last, if you do it yourself, the paint will probably peel off much sooner. And there will be no guarantees for the job well done. Give it some thinking before making your final decision. This is your bathroom and you certainly want it to look as good as it is possible.
