Warning They've Modified Their Item - Vivitar Digital Camera Critique

By Alexa Long

Great price and I like the color choice I made. Highly recommend this camera for the adventurous.

I was especially interested in taking the camera snorkeling on the coral reefs there. It goes down 30ft, which is plenty for snorkeling: the furthest I could comfortable descend is about ~20ft.

We wanted a camera that we didn't have to worry about taking it to the beach or skiing. I read the manual, got it set for my daughter to take pictures right away.

The video goes in and out of focus even in good daylight and keeping a constant distance from the objects being captured. As for the UI, it leaves much to be desired. It has been about 3 months and now the camera won't even turn on. I'm sending it back to Olympus, we will see, I researched "Tough" Cameras for a few months before I made my purchase. We thought it was just a glitch and moved on.

It locked up wile loading and shut down but the computer still showed it as installing so I had to restart my computer, did the same thing after restart. I went from taking pictures on my Droid to this little baby so it was quite the jump. This product seems to predictably have issues so I replaced it with another manufacture. Don't buy the Olympus Stylus Tough, your throwing good money away. This camera has been an excellent buy. We needed a reliable point and shoot for our teen daughter that could be used by everyone else. I bought this because my wife and daughter both bought them when their previous cameras broke. I got sand in my previous Canon camera and it jams. My husband hands it to me and it is extremely warm. I try to shut it off and it won't shut off. The camera never seems to struggle to adjust to get the best pictures as other point and shoots have for me in the past. Lastly the software that comes on the camera is very simple to use and not all extra complicated and filled with useless options.

If you're looking for a camera to occasionally use in a wet environment, but otherwise you want to pull it out of your pocket and get a good photo quickly, this isn't it. I used this camera for almost a month trying to learn how to use it well, but never succeeded, I believe due to the camera itself.

One tech person told me the problem was my iPhoto software and I should contact Apple (I thanked him, and called back to get a more knowledgeable person). After 4 calls and 2 emails to tech support, I still do not know if I need to initialize the camera or not. Remember that any camera of this size will not flash very far so you need to be close to whatever you are photographing when a flash is needed. If you are photographing something or someone in motion, put the camera on the correct setting.
