Photography Tips - Natural Lighting Tips

By

Whether you are an amateur or season professional photographer, it's always good to learn new tricks to add to your repertoire. You may have noticed that some photographers capture their most brilliant photos using nature's natural lighting. There are two magical times of the day where nature's lighting is best to capture some outstanding photos. A lot of times photographers will capture their best photos using nature's light during these time frames.

The lighting of your photograph will obviously depend on the emotion of the photo you are trying to capture. If you are trying to capture the emotion of a frail and delicate flower, you will most likely want to use a natural day light that is soft. On the other hand if you want the flower to look dark and twisted, then the lighting you choose will be much different in order to make the flower look harsh.

If you do want to make your photographs appear fresh and light, then you will want to use natural lighting from one of the magical time periods. There are specifically two time periods during the day when mother nature gives out the best lighting to capture the most amazing photographs. The first time period is in the morning and the second is around sunset. The first time period occurs in that half hour after the sun rises over the horizon. The second time period is the time during the sunset from a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sunset.

What makes these times so special to capture amazing photographs? There are three main factors that make these times of day so crucial for capturing amazing photographs, they are the color, quality and direction provided by the lighting, or resulted by the natural lighting.

The color captured in photographs taken at these two magical times results in saturated, warm colors. This is because the amount of white light is less during these two times compared to other times of the day. Photographs taken during these times produce soft shadows and gentle tonal transitions which improves the overall quality of the photographs. Because of where the sun is located during these two time frames, photographs will emphasize shapes and textures.

Sunset can be a great time to capture some of the most amazing photographs. Generally speaking this window frame occurs during the 20 minutes before and after sunset. The direction of lighting is different during sunrise and sunset, and during sunset the clouds are illuminated with some of the most intense colors. Sunset is a great time to take advantage of nature's lighting by using the sky as a backdrop to your photographs.

Lighting is often used in photography to enhance the quality of the image. Nature provides us with some excellent lighting every day. You can now begin to use natural lighting to capture some very intense photographs.
