The Family's Picture As The Clan Legacy

By Angela Finn

Probably the best photographs that we have are the photos with our family during happy times and that were taken when we least know it. It's also perhaps safe to say that we have enough of these photos already since nearly everybody has their camera phone or digital camera these days. But somehow, no matter how many snapshots we have of our family, we still need a professionally shot family photograph that we can proudly show to the children of our children. We need a whole family picture that we can give as our legacy to the next generations.

In Singapore, a family picture is often a picture of cultural variety. And that's the way it has to be. Family pictures should reflect customs and traditions, and they must also reflect the characters of the members. Because as much as they are for the benefit of the members involved, family photographs are also for the next generation. They're the ultimate family tribute that will carry their story for the generations to come.

family photography in Singapore doesn't have to be rigid, though. Family members can put on their traditional garbs or formal outfits without looking very formal and rigid. A smile from the members can make a difference. And if they so choose, they can also hold a theme in the photo session so the photos can look fun and relaxed. For example, they can put on costumes of cartoon characters or clothing reflecting particular eras. They can also keep it simple and have everyone dress in whatever they want but only in the agreed hue.

But remember that the photos have to be family and kid-friendly, just like in Children photography. It's fine, and even encouraged, for the family members to have fun during the pictorial session, but as there are most likely kids and the elderly present, so it's essential not to go overboard. Avoid unsuitable themes and wearing risqu clothes.

There are people who feel that taking a family photograph is like is a dreadful duty that they must do. It doesn't have to be that way. Involve everybody in the planning process and not just ask them to attend the pictorial session to make the whole experience fun for all. Ask them for suggestion on where to hold the photo session or what theme they should have. If everyone contributes, they would feel more involved.
