Free Events at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

By Steve Alexander

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the UK's biggest cultural event and tickets have been on sale since January. For those that missed the early start, fear not, as there are still a number of free performances and events available for audiences at this year's festival. Here are some of the top picks amongst this year's free and non-ticketed events.

Unusual, shocking, and sometimes downright un-P.C. performances are incredibly popular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Gypsy Charms' Celebrity Dance-off is no different. You'll get to see the likes of Margaret Thatcher, David Beckham and Jesus Christ battling it out on the dance floor. The show offers an easy-going and entertaining break from the serious and depressing performances, although it's a bit more low-brow than the usual avant-garde shows on display at the Fringe.

Each year the PBH Free Fringe Festival organises a series of performances by comedians, poets, and actors, entirely free, for everyone to enjoy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This year promises to be their biggest yet, with 36 venues spread across Edinburgh. If you are feeling lucky, head over to the London is Funny event at the Ciao Roma venue, which promises to host four of the world's best comics.

On the opening night, the identities of the performers will be revealed. It's well worth paying a visit though as previous performers have included Josh Widdecombe, Rufus Hound, and Paul Sinha. Starting on Saturday August 4th and ending on Saturday August 25th, the event gives audiences plenty of opportunity to enjoy this event.

Whilst many hotels will be anticipating the Fringe crowds, it is still possible for visitors to find cheap hotels in the city. The Newtown Apartments offers accommodation for short or long-stay visitors, ideal for those that are planning to stay for the entire festival. The selection of rooms available consists of studios or one-bedroom apartments consisting of twin or double beds, which are particularly helpful for couples.
